What are dental sealants, and how do they work?
Food and plaque become trapped on the surface of your teeth daily. Decay will arise if this debris isn’t removed. Certain teeth can be harder to clean effectively, especially for kids, the elderly, or physically challenged individuals. Dental sealants are a thin liquid plastic coating that we apply to the chewing surface of teeth to keep out decay-causing bacteria. Since it’s first in a liquid form, it can make its way into deep pits and fissures, creating a shield over enamel (outer surface of the tooth).
Dental sealants are often perfect for:
- People who don’t have the best home care routine.
- Patients who struggle with their brushing technique due to physical limitations.
- People with naturally deep fissures and pits in their molars. (Did you know that teeth are as unique as fingerprints? Even identical twins don’t share the same teeth.)
- People with dementia and have an unpredictable routine.
