Background on inlays and onlays
Dental inlays come in various materials, including composite, gold, and porcelain. They are used to fix moderately damaged or decayed teeth. They are manufactured by a lab and then bonded or cemented to teeth.
An onlay, otherwise known as a partial crown, repairs significant damage to the tip of a tooth. At our dental office, we will first place a temporary onlay until the permanent one has been made and is ready to go. We will schedule a second appointment to fit and bond the permanent onlay to your tooth.
An inlay is a pre-molded filling that goes in the grooves of teeth. Usually, it’s used as a restoration for cavities located in the middle of a tooth. The treatment itself is straightforward and only requires a local anesthetic.
Inlays and onlays may be ideal for you if you have…
- broken or fractured teeth
- cracked fillings
- severely decayed teeth
- and if you want a cosmetic improvement.
Both of these treatments are for premolars or molars. With composite inlays and onlays, we can colour-match them to your natural smile. You can smile away and no one will be able to tell that you’ve undergone this treatment.
